Delivery Man Crushed as Cebu Mall Service Elevator Malfunctions

A delivery man was crushed to death when a service elevator of a mall in downtown Cebu City he was on malfunctioned and crashed downward on Monday afternoon.

Police Officer 3 Cristobal Geronimo, an investigator of the Homicide Section of the Cebu City Police Office (CCPO), identified the fatality as Juan Udto, 24, a resident of Looc, Lapu-Lapu City.

Geronimo said Udto was on his way to deliver goods from the fourth floor of Elizabeth Mall (Emall) on Sanciangko St., Cebu City, going down to the third floor.

Witnesses told police the victim was loading the goods inside the service elevator that is used to carry stocks, when it malfunctioned and crashed downward.

Udto, whose body was crushed, succumbed to severe injuries in his head and body, causing his instant death.

Police said a mall representative promised the mall management will shoulder the burial fees of the victim and give his family the equivalent of his salary for two years. (PNA) LAP/EB/EDS
