In just a year, since its creation, the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission takes pride in its accomplishments.

This year, the commission launched its flagship program called the Grassroots Sports Development Program. It has trained around 2,000 coaches, mostly teachers, representing the 51 towns and cities in the province.

The recently trained teachers/ coaches right away went on a search potential student-athletes that will represent the province in various national tournaments.

Last July, the grassroots development-training program was conducted simultaneously in different municipalities such as Badian and Dalaguete for the participants from the south. Another training was conducted in Balamban for the western, while Liloan and Medellin served as the venues for the participants from the north.

One of the participating coaches shared that the training was the best training that he has been to. He also said that the trainers were undoubtedly experts in their field.

“My co-trainers in table tennis were satisfied because we learned a lot of techniques from our resource speaker,” said coach Filjun Benlot of Agbalanga Elemntary School.

The training proved worthwhile as the province climbed all the way to fourth spot from ranking 24th in last year’s Batang Pinoy National Championship.

This year, the province bagged 23 golds, 15 silvers, and 20 bronze medals, besting over 200 participating local government units around the country.

The sports program enabled the province to discover new coaches and student-athletes for this year’s Batang Pinoy. The pool of coaches increased from 27 to 32, while the student-athletes rose from 78 to 234.

In the first few months of the commission’s creation, the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission helped organize a number of sports tournaments along with some other sports organizations.

These sports activities included the First Regional Flag Football Tournament, National Age Group Chess Championship and Dragon Boat Races.

The commission also organized the Cebu Provincial Capitol Employees Sportsfest 2015, First Inter-District Basketball Tournament, and the successful Cebu Provincial Athletic and Cultural Meet in partnership with the Department of Education.

The commission will soon distribute sports equipment to local government units and schools in the entire province although they have yet to come up with fixed guidelines for the requests of the materials.

CSPC’s main function is to serve as the policy making and implementing body through institutionalized sports development programs that targets to promote physical fitness, good health, sports excellence and value formation among the citizens of the province of Cebu. (Cris de los Reyes/Capitol PIO)
