CPHO’s ‘Adopt-A-Hospital Program’ to Tap Cebu Medical Schools

The Cebu Provincial Health Office (CPHO) is currently coordinating with medical schools in Cebu for a probable employment of private practicing doctors as ‘on-call’ specialists in all province-run hospitals under its ‘adopt-a-hospital’ program.

CPHO chief Dr. Rene Catan said they are tailoring agreement with Southwestern University (SWU-Phinma), Cebu Velez General Hospital and Cebu Doctors’ University Hospital for the said program.

‘Adopt-a-hospital program’ is a CPHO-initiated project to mount better delivery and quality health services to the public as envisioned under Governor Hilario P. Davide III’s health priority agenda.

Catan explained that through the program, province-run hospitals will be opened to medical institutions with training hospitals allowing their specialists in various medical fields help attend to patients confined in public hospitals.

“They (medical schools) have the human resources but do not have enough cases while we have the cases but not enough specialists,” Catan said.

The CPHO chief revealed that negotiations are ongoing with Southwestern University’s Sacred Heart Hospital for the program’s execution in Cebu Provincial Hospital (CPH) – Carcar City.

“This is going to be a win-win situation for us. Capitol will gain additional specialists for the hospitals while the schools will have more medical cases to attend to,” he added.

SWU-Phinma, the first medical school outside Manila, offers medicine course with fully-equipped training hospital. Representatives of SWU-Phinma already visited CPH-Carcar last March 10 to see if it can be their training ground for obstetrics and gynecology (OB-GYNE).

“After this, we’ll talk with Cebu Velez General Hospital, Cebu Doctors’ University Hospital and other training hospitals in Cebu City to adopt one provincial/district hospital each,” Catan said.

Last March 6, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan authorized Davide to hire on-call doctors to augment the medical workforce in all provincial and district hospitals.
