The Cebu City government headed by Re-elected Cebu City Mayor Michael Lopez Rama, through its Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission (CHAC) successfully commemorated the 152nd Birth Anniversary of Dr. José Protasio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda Wednesday morning June 19, 2013.

Bearing the theme: “Rizalismo: Giya sa Kabataan, Kadasig sa Katawhan, Alang sa Sanag nga Kaugmaon,” the City prepared activities to celebrate the natal day of the Philippine National Hero.

A Holy Mass at the Rizal Monument located at Plaza Sugbu, Cebu City hall grounds was offered and officiated by Rev. Msgr. Roberto F. Alesna, a Parish Priest of the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral. The priest in his homily urged everyone to be a hero in their own little ways.

Mayor Rama in his message emphasized that “The significance of this celebration is to remind us for the ideals and aspirations of Dr. Jose Rizal,” adding that “my re-election means I will continue leading the city whether you like it or not, perhaps I am destined here in city hall with my initial MLR which means for me as Magellan, Lapulapu and Rizal.” Rama said.

The Mayor added “And I want Rizal to feel that he did not die in vain because we continue what he started to fight against foreign dominion – an additional reminder why Rizal died.” he said.

“What is the significance of your attendance today?” the People’s Mayor asked everyone and further urged to stand by the ideals and aspiration of our National hero. The Mayor further added “try to prove yourself because there can be a time that you will be rewarded, as I believe why I am here for – to continue to serve in the name of public service and in the name of God.” Rama said.

The People’s Mayor and other city officials such as Vice Mayor-elect Edgardo Labella, Councilor’s Joey Daluz, Roberto Cabarrubias, Sisinio Andales and Noel Wenceslao together with the city’s department heads led the ceremonial flower offering right after the short program.

Wednesday’s event, however, does not constitute a holiday unlike the Rizal Day which is celebrated every December 30, which commemorates the hero’s death,  is observe as a special non-working day throughout the country.

Meanwhile, Senator Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos Jr. already filed Senate Bill 2743 which seeks to change the observance of Rizal Day celebration from December 30 to June 19. As of press time, the bill is yet to be approved. (By: Greggy Jiggs P. Senados, PIO Staff)
