Cebu’s PHP10.6-B BRT Bus Stations to Showcase Cebuano Culture, Traits

The design for the bus stations of the PHP10.6-billion Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project in Cebu City will showcase Cebuano culture and traits, an official said.

Lawyer Rafael Yap, BRT Cebu project manager, said the planned designs for the 31 BRT bus stations from Barangay Bulacao to Talamban are part of the initial outputs of the detailed engineering design (DED) being undertaken by South Korean consultant Kunhwa Engineering and Consultancy.

Yap said the concept for the bus stations was inspired by the flowers in the mountain villages and the sun.

The edges of the roof and the sides of the stations are composed of soft curves, which are like the outside of the petal of a flower.

The walls on the side have sun rays. These are painted yellow to also showcase one of the dominant colors during the Sinulog celebration.

“The concept design for the bus stations shows the sunnydisposition of Cebuanos, the light and cheerful nature of the people and our festivals. The consultants also used the sun because we are a tropical country and it is on our flag,” said Yap.

However, Yap said the bus stations’ design will still be improved.

The complete output and result of the DED, he said, will be presented once the study is finished.

The DED, which started last May, will last eight months, or until January.

But Yap said it might be extended for another two months because they have asked the consultants to do additional job, which he did not disclose yet.

BRT proponents hope to have the system up and running by 2017. (PNA) LAP/EB/EDS
