CANONIZATION OF THE TWO POPES

On Sunday at the St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican, Pope Francis will canonize Pope John Paul II, the charismatic but conservative Catholic leader and Pope John XXIII, the Vicar of Christ who called for the Second Vatican Council.

Pope Francis declared Pope John XXIII a saint in 2013 based on his merits of opening the Second Vatican Council, bypassing the traditionally required second miracle.
