Published

on

The Court of Appeals (CA) Cebu Station has reported an increase in the case disposal rate from 42 percent in 2011 to 64 percent this year.

Of the 2,676 cases submitted for decision in 2011, the CA disposed 1,131 cases, or a 42-percent case disposal rate.

The CA also disposed 1,434 cases, or about 64 percent, out of 2,256 cases submitted for decision from Jan. 1 to Sept. 30 this year, the CA Cebu reported.

CA records showed that the number of pending cases steadily dropped in the past five years, from 6,088 cases in 2011 to 3,884 cases as of last Sept. 31.

The disposed cases were labor, criminal, certiorari, and review of administrative cases issued by the Office of the Ombudsman.

The number of pending cases submitted for decision totaled 824 cases as of last Oct. 21, CA records showed.

Of the pending cases submitted for decision, 553 cases have been pending for a decision for less than one year; 219 cases, for about one year; and 52 cases, since 2013.

CA Cebu Station Executive Justice Gabriel Ingles said one of the causes of delay of case resolution is the longer transmittal of the transcript of stenographic notes from lower courts by either party.

The total CA caseload as of last Sept. 31 was 5,272, while the disposed cases reached 1,836 cases. Pending cases in the current year reached 3,884.

An average of 130 to 140 new cases per month are filed in the CA, while about 180 to 200 cases are resolved every month. (PNA) CTB/EB/SSC
