Businessmen Complain vs Barangay Workers Asking Money for Garbage Collection

Owners of business establishments in Barangay Mabolo are complaining against the barangay’s garbage collectors for they allegedly refuse to pick up their wastes unless they will be given money.

The representatives of Express Inn Hotel and Econogas Technology Inc. were among those who complained before the Cebu City Hall in last Monday’s meeting initiated by the Reduce Danger Zones (ReDZ) headed by lawyer Jose Daluz III.

The hotel’s representative narrated to City Legal Officer Jerone Castillo that after they failed to give in to the financial demand of the garbage collectors, they refused to collect their garbage again. Owners said this is the reason why they give money to garbage collectors every time when they collect their wastes.

“Bitaw sir, kanang mga garbage collectors sa Mabolo mangayo g’yud na sila og bayad kay dili kuno ilang trabaho ang paghakut sa among basura kay business establishments kuno mi,” another representative of a business firm added.

Mabolo Barangay Captain Reynaldo Ompoc arrived while the discussion about the issue was still going on and quickly said he never allowed the barangay’s garbage collectors to ask for money or whatever in exchange for collecting the garbage.

“Amo man g’yud na nga hakuton ang mga basura. Tulo gud na kabuok ang among garbage truck sa barangay,” said Ompoc, who ask the complainant to just call up the barangay officials if this will happen again.

But the representatives of business establishments explained that they already called up the attention of the barangay officials, but they were given a ran around, and worst a barangay personnel told them “Dili na kana among trabaho, ila na kana sa DPS,” referring to the Department of Public Services.

Mabolo is among the 52 barangays in Cebu City whose barangay personnel are receiving additional honorariums from City Hall so that they would help the DPS in collecting garbage within their territorial jurisdictions.

“Maghimo kita og guidelines ana aron dili na magtulod-tulod sa trabaho ang barangay garbage collectors ug ang DPS,” said legal officer Castillo.

Daluz called up the meeting to ask the business establishment owners to help the city by properly disposing their garbage, instead of throwing them to the creeks.
