The British Council in the Philippines has opened calls for applications for the Newton PhD Programme and Institutional Links under the Newton Agham Programme.

Working through the Newton Agham Programme, the British Council and the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) are offering the Newton PhD Programme, a jointly funded programme that offers full-time PhD scholarships for Filipino researchers at a United Kingdom higher education institution from January 2017 until April 2020. Deadline of application is on 27 June 2016.

The aim of the Newton PhD Programme is to facilitate the capacity building of individuals and the building of sustainable, long-lasting links between the UK and the Philippines. It is also aimed at providing opportunities for international training and development at the doctoral level, as well as supporting the production of highly-trained researchers in the Philippines with international experience.

The programme is open to Filipino citizens who must be in the first five years of their research career, have obtained a Master’s degree in a related field and must be a faculty or staff member of a Philippine higher education institute (HEI).

Also part of the Newton Agham Programme is the Newton Institutional Links, which provides grants for the development of research and innovation collaborations between the UK and the Philippines. The research facilitated by these grants tackles local development needs and challenges such as extreme weather conditions, access to affordable health care, food, and energy security.

The grants are intended to provide small-scale seed funding to start and develop collaborations between academic groups, departments, and institutions in partner countries and the UK. They can also be used to support the exchange of expertise and research knowledge, and establish local hubs for UK-partner country activities.

Application forms and the guidance for applications are available for download at the British Council website (www.britishcouncil.ph/programmes/newton-fund).
