Boris Johnson Quits as UK PM, Would Remain in Position until New Leader is Chosen

Boris Johnson announced on Thursday that he would quit as the British prime minister as he lost the support of his ministers and conservative lawmakers in a dramatic fashion.

However, Johnson said he would stay in the post until a successor was chosen.

After more than 50 ministers and aides quit their posts, and with lawmakers saying he must go, Johnson bowed down and said that it was clear to him that the party sought to put someone else in the post.

Johnson said however that his departure was due to “herd instinct” within the parliament.

“Today I have appointed a cabinet to serve, as I will, until a new leader is in place,” Johnson said outside his Downing Street office as close allies and his wife Carrie looked on.

Johnson made no apologies during his speech, but said that he is “sad” to be leaving the “best job in the world”.

“I know that there will be many people who are relieved and perhaps quite a few who will also be disappointed. And I want you to know how sad I am to be giving up the best job in the world. But them’s the breaks,” Johnson added.

Johnson’s tenure as prime minister has been controversial, as scandals included breaches of COVID-19 lockdown protocols, the luxurious renovation of his official residence, and appointing a minister accused of sexual misconduct.

The scandals eventually dragged him down, leading to his announcement. (GFB)
