Board Member: Freedom a Continuing Struggle

The freedom our forefathers have fought for is a continuing struggle, Negros Occidental Board Member Valentino Miguel Alonso said.

In a program commemorating the 120th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Independence, he said the present generation needs to be reminded of the struggle Katipuneros still continues until today.

Speaking before a crowd from private and government entities at the Provincial Capitol Lagoon, he said the theme “Pagbabagong ipinaglaban sa masaganang kinabukasan” is a fight for a better future.

He said the modern heroes and the men in uniform are fighting for freedom to a common family working hard to provide food on their table.

The same heroic service is seen among teachers going in far-flung areas to provide quality education.

“To all men and women in public service, I salute and chailenge you our modern heroes to rekindle the spirit of patriotism that our heroes 120 years ago fought for,” he said.

He cited the bravery of General Emilio Aguinaldo who at 29 years-old declared Philippine independence from Spanish occupation. This right for self-determination is inherent in every Filipino across the country.

“When our leaders in Negros in the name of Anecito Lacson and Juan Araneta decided to revolt against Spaniards, this is the same spirit of self-determination that we Negrenses share with all Filipinos,” he added.

Alonso urged everyone to continue to work for this freedom noting “Pagbabagong ipinaglaban sa masaganang kinabukasan.” (JBG/Lljr-PIA6)
