Responsible Use of Social Media, Observing Journalistic Standards Highlight Whole-Day Workshop of 70 Capitol Youth Reporters
Close to 70 youth reporters from different towns and cities in the Province of Cebu gathered at the Capitol Social Hall last Saturday, June 30, for another seminar-workshop on citizen journalism.
The Capitol Youth Reporters Corps participated in a refresher course tackling how they would utilize the different social media platforms in sharing development stories in their respective areas.
The whole-day activity started with the presentation of the Six-key Development Agenda by Provincial Information Office (PIO) social media curator and editor Ainjeliz Dela Torre-Orong.
According to Dela Torre-Orong, the Six-key Development Agenda will serve as a guide for the youth reporters in crafting their own stories.
Lawyer Ian Vincent Manticajon, University of the Philippines Cebu faculty, then shared to the youth participants the background and principles of citizen journalism. Manticajon also emphasized the importance of practicing the journalistic standards and ethics as youth reporters.
“You base your credibility on details, and not on who you are affiliated to,” said Manticajon.
After the lectures, the participants applied their learnings in their group workshops.
Ronclarck Dagohon, Pag-asa Youth Association of the Philippines (PYAP) Federation officer in San Remigio, said that he is challenged to impart his learnings to other young people in his town.
“As a youth advocate, I want to echo my learnings to my fellow youths and train them to be effective reporters as well,” said Dagohon.
Vincent Comeros, the local youth development officer of Tabuelan town, said that his insights from the activity would help their municipality as they are also developing their own content online.
Provincial Youth Commission (PYC) Executive Director Charlton James Canoy challenged the youth reporters to be the Capitol’s trusted partners in disseminating true and accurate information to the public.
“Be the vanguards of truth. Write for the people, and report for the Sugbuanons,” said Canoy in his inspirational message.
The refresher course is the second seminar-workshop organized by the Provincial Information Office, in partnership with the Provincial Youth Commission for the Capitol Youth Reporters Corps.
