If there is one activity that can unite people, that’s sports, said Gov. Hilario P. Davide III during the opening ceremony of the 2nd Governor’s Cup Inter-Cities/Municipalities Basketball Tournament on Sunday, April 15 at the New Cebu Coliseum.

Davide was elated by the increase of participants this year, hoping that the tournament would be as exciting as the first edition where the Minglanilla Archangels won the crown.

This year, the tournament drew 45 teams, 10 of which are newcomers.

Vice Gov. Agnes Magpale, for her part, said the tournament aims not only for physical development, but also the mental and emotional aspects.

As an added bonus, she said, the league opens opportunities for scholarships to potential players who are recuited by universities in Manila and Cebu as varsity players.

The opening ceremony was graced by Michel Lhuillier, chairman of the Cebu Provincial Sports Commission; and his wife Amparito; Jobel Angan-Davide, wife of the governor.

Also present in the event were members of the Provincial Board, 1st District Congressman Sam Sam Gullas, CPSC lawyer Ramil Abing and mayors from various towns.
