Disney Releases Tagalog Single “Hangganan Ko” as Live-Action “Moana” Opens in the Philippines

Disney’s Moana makes the leap from animation to live action with bigger-than-life performances and a local musical touch for Filipino audiences. Catherine Lagaʻaia steps into the title role, bringing a grounded emotional core to Moana’s voyage, while Dwayne Johnson returns as the demigod Maui, his signature charisma and physicality now amplified in a practical, tactile world. The result is a reimagined visual and emotional palette that keeps the heart of the original while leaning into the spectacle and intimacy possible in live-action storytelling.

Music has always been central to Moana’s identity, and the live-action version preserves that through faithful renditions of the original songs alongside new promotional adaptations. Disney commissioned Filipina actress and singer Kai Montinola to record “Hangganan Ko,” the Tagalog version of the film’s signature song, ‘How Far I’ll Go,’ written by Tony Award-winner Lin-Manuel Miranda, which won the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media and received Best Original Song nominations at the Oscars and Golden Globe Awards in 2017.

“Moana has long resonated with Filipino audiences through its themes of family, courage, and connection to the ocean. As a nation with a deep love for music, we’re thrilled to collaborate with Kai Montinola on the Tagalog version of ‘How Far I’ll Go,’” said Allie Benedicto, Marketing Director, Emerging Southeast Asia, The Walt Disney Company.

Disney’s Moana opens in Philippine cinemas on July 8, 2026. Fans can catch Kai Montinola performing “Hangganan Ko” live at SM Mall of Asia (July 8) and SM Seaside Cebu (July 12).
