Over 200 modern jeepneys now have tap-to-ride options for their passengers around Metro Cebu area following a partnership with cashless technology using the digital wallet Maya.

People’s Jeep and Maya introduced Maya People’s Jeep Card which can be used for hundreds of modern jeepneys.

People’s Jeep is operated by Cebu People’s Multipurpose Cooperative (CPMC) which has over 200 modern jeepneys plying routes in Cebu City, Mandaue City, Lapu-Lapu City, Naga City, and in the towns of Minglanilla and Liloan.

Michael Abella, Vice Chairperson of People’s Jeep, said it is time to turn our attention to the “evolution of Jeepney transport in Cebu.”

For his part, CPMC President and CEO Brian Yap said the card is reflective of “Cebu’s commitment to adopting forward-thinking urban transportation solutions. By merging cutting-edge cashless technology with a strong focus on passenger comfort, safety, and environmental sustainability, this initiative is redefining urban mobility in the city.”

The card will cost a commuter P150. Equipped with RFID technology, passengers can now effortlessly tap their way onto PeoplesJeep vehicles, eliminating the need for cash transactions and reducing contact points.

“We’re thrilled about this groundbreaking initiative as it enhances the daily commute of Cebuanos and contributes significantly to the modernization of public transportation in the city. Moreover, it brings all-in-one digital banking to the hands of our commuting public, fostering greater financial adoption,” said Richard Labitag, Maya Head of Acceptance and SME.

Upon boarding a PeoplesJeep, a passenger assistance officer (PAO) will enter the trip details on the point-of-sale (POS) device. The passenger will verify the details and tap their Maya Peoples Jeep cards on the POS, generating a receipt for each successful transaction.

Starting September 21, passengers can easily avail of the Maya PeoplesJeep card by visiting the booths at the Cebu City IT Park Terminal. (ZAG)
