The University of the Philippines Cebu Fine Arts Student Organization presents the 39th National Artist Jose Joya Awards and 40th Annual Student Exhibit at the 3rd Floor SM Art Center, SM City Cebu.

The annual painting competition is named after national artist for the visual arts, Jose Joya, who as dean of the UP Diliman College of Fine Arts in 1976, decided to hold a contest for painting.

José T. Joya (1931–1995) was a Filipino abstract artist and a National Artist of the Philippines awardee. He was a printmaker, mixed media artist, and a former dean of the University of the Philippines’ College of Fine Arts. He pioneered abstract expressionism in the Philippines.

In the year 1975, Jose Joya, along with Cebuano artists Martino Abellana, Professor Julian Jumalon, and Carmelo Tamayo founded the Fine Arts program of UP Cebu. It was the first degree-granting formal institution of the Fine Arts outside of Manila.

The exhibit runs from April 7 to 19, 2015. The event is also brought to us by Gold Sponsors James Doran- Webb and ColorMatch.
