What Happens to Your Body When You Skip Breakfast?

Published

on

You woke up late and now you’re running late for work – that’s how you end up skipping breakfast, right?

Whatever your reasons may be for skipping breakfast, you may want to change your mind after you read about how it affects your body.

Fatigue

Skipping your breakfast will slow down your metabolism, which will cause you to feel tired. When you eat all your meals regularly, they effectively fuel your metabolism to run smoothly, thus keeping you energetic and alert.

Affects your hormones

When you skip your breakfast, it greatly affects your hormones. This hormonal change increases the cortisol level in your body, thus causing you to feel stressed out. It also causes your insulin levels to rise and fall rapidly, which in turn leads to blood sugar problems and weight gain too.

Your body stores fat

You eat breakfast after having starved all night. This breakfast is meant to revive your system before you start your day. When you fail to do so, your body gets confused and thinks that you’re starving. This will cause your body to start storing fat to conserve fuel. Don’t allow your body to store fat, eat your breakfast instead.

Affects your mood

Skipping your breakfast not only causes your hormones to go crazy, it also leaves you fatigued. Both these factors can make you moody right at the start of your day. You wouldn’t like to have such a mood swing right at the start of your day, would you?

Triggers overeating

When you skip your breakfast, you practically starve yourself till your next meal. Then, when you finally get some food, you lose control of your hunger and end up binge eating. Also, at this point your natural hormones like leptin and ghrelin that control your hunger and tell you when you’re full, weaken and don’t function to their optimal level. This is another reason why you could end up overeating at your next meal.

Weight gain

We have already discussed how skipping breakfast affects your metabolism and hunger pangs – both these factors cause you to eat more and stock up calories. Apart from that, it also causes fatigue that makes you feel tired to do any sort of physical activity. All these things eventually cause weight gain.
