Pomodoro Technique: Short Bursts of High-Level Productivity

Published

on

Today’s fast-paced world certainly contributes to the distraction factor many individuals are experiencing on a daily basis. The vast amount of work and other tasks that need to be done add to the stress of workers and students. Couple this with other factors such as having an off-day or lack of rest and you have a day where productivity might take a hit.

There’s a way to keep productivity levels high, though, through short bursts of productivity. Enter the Pomodoro technique.

Pomodoro technique
The Pomodoro technique relies heavily on quick bursts of productivity, whether it be studying, working, or other things. This technique is perfect for those who easily get distracted. The technique was developed by Francesco Cirillo in the early 1990s as he constantly found himself struggling to focus on tasks such as studying. The term “Pomodoro,” the Italian for “tomatoes” was a homage to the timer that Cirillo was using, which was a tomato-shaped timer.

How does it work
The premise of the Pomodoro technique is to chop up tasks in short intervals with the use of a timer, which instills a sense of urgency in those using it. The division of tasks through the timer encourages focus and the reduction of distractions. Moreover, the technique is also a way to keep the one using it engaged throughout the given task, whether it be studying or working.

How to do it
A timer and a to-do list are all that one needs to start utilizing the Pomodoro technique. Each task may be given a 25-minute timer to finish.

The ability to rest
What’s good about the technique is the ability to have short cooldowns in between tasks. For example, after spending a very productive 25 minutes on a single task, you may set 5 minutes for resting before starting on the next task or the next thing on your to-do list.

Moreover, the technique also allows for someone to have a long break of 15 to 20 minutes after finishing 4 tasks.

The Pomodoro technique is a very simple yet very effective way to have high productivity while still being able to rest. The division of tasks mostly eliminates the possibility of having distractions as the technique conditions the user of having a sense of urgency. This keeps the mind focused and ready to tackle all the tasks of the day. The technique also allows the user to have breaks in between to avoid being burnt out. (GFB)
