Men: Tips to Make a Great First Impression

Published

on

No matter what your friends say, first impressions count. Whether it’s a vibe you give off or how you handle yourself during an awkward silence, there are plenty of ways you can make a good first impression.

1. Start the conversation

There’s nothing uneasy than an awkward silence when meeting someone new. Be confident, take the initiative and give yourself a few smart openings to kick-start a conversation. Just remember that pick-up lines are more likely to offend than endear.

2. Beware of your body language

Women are very adept at picking up on multiple signals. Slouching, looking around the room or avoiding her gaze–just to mention a few tendencies. Nonverbal communication is just as important as what you’re saying. It is good to stand up straight, maintain eye contact and give off a positive energy.

3. Smile

Just as it’s important to handle yourself in a confident manner, smiling is a key element of making a good first impression. Some men believe the enigmatic, aloof type is what gets women interested, but being genuine and allowing yourself to smile can loosen a tensed mood.

4. Put the phone down

There’s nothing worse than having a conversation with someone only to have them start typing away on their smartphone. Put your technology away for a while – those messages will still be there when you’re done talking. Just like how any other person would feel too, the lady you’re interested in would feel discriminated if you’re focusing on your phone while talking to her. Feel excited about meeting someone new and your actions will follow.

5. Listen

Being in control doesn’t mean you have to dominate the conversation. Listen, ask questions and be genuinely courteous – it will speak volumes about who you are as a person.

6. Don’t brag

It’s great to be confident, but overselling yourself is an instant turn-off. Don’t brag about your salary and certainly don’t try to one-up her. It isn’t a job interview that you’re into!

7. Know when to finish talking and say goodbye

You may have made an incredible first impression, but there’s no point throwing all your cards on the table straight away. A little mystery never hurt anyone and it’ll only make her want to find out more about you next time. If it feels like the time is right to end the conversation, finish it.
