For many, the work world has revolved around being a follower, just existing in the company, and being cogs in a big, unstoppable machine. Expendable. Then, the COVID-19 pandemic arrived, prompting countless individuals to risk it all and open small businesses.

Suddenly, former followers found themselves in uncharted territory – leading others.

The path from being a follower all your life to being a leader is hard, but these tips might help you:

Lead by Example

Don’t ask them to do something you won’t do yourself. Leadership demands more than just giving orders; it’s about setting the pace. Don’t expect your team to take risks or make sacrifices that you’re unwilling to make yourself. Be ready to dive into the challenges alongside them. Demonstrating commitment, especially in challenging times, earns respect and fosters a sense of unity. Don’t tell them to jump off a cliff when you yourself won’t ever do it.

Nurture Relationships

Check with them often. Effective leadership is not just all about tasks and goals; it’s about the people you’re guiding, and most importantly, your people who come into the office or shop every day, ready to grind it out with you. Regularly check in on your team’s well-being, both professionally and personally.

Understand their strengths and weaknesses, and strive to build a personal connection with each team member. In doing so, you’ll not only gain valuable insights but also create a supportive, trusting atmosphere, without the need for forced pizza parties every Friday just to have a “familial” feeling around.

Shoulder the Burden Together

A true leader doesn’t just give orders; they share the load. There’s a stark contrast between being a “boss” and a “leader.” A boss lets the team bear the weight of pushing him to a better monthly income, while a leader takes the burden of carrying and utilizing each teammate to maximize their potential and have the team reach new heights. Don’t be the boss. Don’t be the one who simply directs; be the driving force behind your team’s success.

If you find yourself complacent, it’s time to reassess your leadership.

Transitioning from being a follower in a company setting to being the leader of your own small business is a challenging but rewarding journey. Leadership is more than a title; it’s about guiding, supporting, and inspiring your team.

Lead by example, nurture relationships, and actively engage in the journey toward shared goals. By doing so, you’ll not only navigate this new role successfully but also empower your team to reach new heights together. (GFB)
