Homegrown retail giant NCCC Malls formally took over Victoria Plaza which is considered as the first mall in Mindanao.

In a brief ceremony held Wednesday, March 27 at Cinema 5 of the Victoria Plaza mall the new management presented the audio-visual presentation of the plans for the 9.6- hectare property.

“Many have talked the historic significance of this place, Victoria Plaza being the first mall of the Davao Region, only a child of Davao knows how to remember and honor this history. NCCC is here to make sure the city’s history remains but with our focus firmly on the future, this will not be left behind,” Sharlene Faye Lim, NCCC malls president said.

The development plan of Victoria Plaza to be undertaken in five phases will feature premium service apartments, retail strip, mall and sky garden and the NCCC tower along with a lush public green space. It aims to redefine Davao City’s urban landscape.

“What makes me glad that the property is being acquired by a family also running a mall and they are experienced and good at it. And hopefully it could add to the business activity of Davao City,” President Rodrigo Roa Duterte said in a video message which was shown during the ceremony.

Victoria Plaza was opened to the public on March 16, 1993 and is previously owned by Sunrise Investment and Development Corporation. The Philippine National Bank of which the mall was mortgaged eventually took possession of the mall which hosts six cinemas, a department store, supermarket and retail spaces. (PIA/RG Alama)
