Police and military officials in Central Visayas assured Gov. Hilario P. Davide III on Wednesday, Jan. 9, that Cebu remains safe following the travel advisory of the United Kingdom, warning its citizens from traveling to Mindanao and parts of southern Cebu.

In a briefing, Chief Insp. Florendo Fajardo of the Provincial Police Operations Plans Branch said that security measures are in place to keep not only southern Cebu but the entire province safe for tourists.

The police assessment, however, threw some words of caution and asked the public to remain vigilant.

“We are not discounting the possibilities of threats and with the number of tourist influx especially during Sinulog and upcoming summer season, we will always beef up our security measures and double our vigilance against lawless elements,” Fajardo said.

Likewise, Col. Noel Baluyan of the Armed Forces of the Philippines Tasked Force Cebu has same assessment with the police.

Baluyan said soldiers have been deployed across the province to beef up security.

Davide thanked the police and military officials for keeping Cebu safe not only for tourists but, most of all, for the residents.

“We have to be very watchful,” said Davide, adding that intelligence work could be expanded by tapping barangay personnel and the communities.

The security briefing was attended by Joselito “Boboi” Costas, head of the Provincial Tourism Office; Baltazar Tribunalo Jr., head of the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, as well as representatives from various municipalities of southern Cebu. (Cebu Provincial Government)
