“The nutrition of every Carcaranon is important, your presence today, signifies that we (can) take up the challenge of reducing malnutrition in our city”, were the words by Mayor Nicepuro L. Apura during the closing ceremony of the two (2) day joint Barangay Nutrition Committee and City Nutrition Committee training held on 18-19 October 2018.

Recognizing the need for nutrition workers and local officials to have a deeper understanding of the nutrition program and how to address malnutrition problems at the community level, the City of Carcar organized said nutrition program management (NPM) orientation to have concrete changes in the city’s nutrition situation.

The 2017 Operation Timbang Plus report showed that among the cities of Central Visayas, Carcar City ranks 3rd in the highest prevalence on underweight with 7.6% prevalence rate or 7 in every 100 preschool children and 2nd on both stunting (short for age) and wasting (thin for height) with 25.3% or 3 in every 10 and 7.7% or 8 in every 100 preschool children, respectively. Operation Timbang Plus identifies malnutrition among preschool children thru mass weighing and height taking.

A total of 50 participants composed of city nutrition committee membes, barangay captains, barangay councilors on health, midwives and barangay nutrition scholars were given NPM orientation. The two (2) day activity/workshop equipped the attendees on how to craft a nutrition action plan both for the city and barangay level and ultimately how to manage their respective nutrition programs from the barangay to the city level.

RNPC Dr. Parolita A. Mission also graced the beginning of the activity. She emphasized that malnutrition is a multisectoral problem and needs also a multisectoral approach to be able to solve it. She also thanked those who attended for giving time to join the activity and better understand the nutrition program.

Serving as a resource person for the training was Mr. Dave F. Bargamento, Nutrition Officer Designate. He was joined by Ms. Desiree Guevarra, RN, City Nutrition Program Coordinator and Ms, Marilyn Go, Nutrition Secretariat.

With the conclusion of said workshop, it is aimed that nutrition committees will be able to make a better barangay nutrition action plans and a more collaborative city nutrition action plan. (DFB)
