Filipino nurse Ridel Francisco was recognized as the Nurse of the Year at the 2018 Barchester Care Awards in London, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said Wednesday.

Francisco, based at the Lynde House in Richmond, landed at the top spot of the prestigious national care accolade from among 1,500 nominations from people across the United Kingdom.

After being shortlisted as one of four division winners, Francisco was interviewed by a panel of judges for the final round.

“I am very proud and very honoured to be receiving this award,” he said in an interview with the Richmond and Twickenham Times.

“We work hard here at our home with a focus on the people we care for, and not for accolades. But it really is very special to be recognised in this way.”

The awards celebrate staff and volunteers, who go the extra mile in caring for residents and patients living in care homes and mental health hospitals.

“His enthusiasm at Lynde House keeps his team on their toes and they’re all the better for it,” said Barchester’s Julia Atherton, Director of Nursing and one of the judges for the Nurse of the Year category.

“Always learning and improving, but never short of time for any resident in his care, Ridel’s sensitive yet hands-on approach demonstrates the high standard of care he sets on himself, which is nothing short of exemplary.”

“Filipinos are valued all over the world for our selfless and committed brand of service that we extend to others,” said Ambassador to London Antonio Lagdameo. “Ridel’s recognition proves that indeed, Filipino nurses are among the world’s best.” (DFA PR)
