Marikina City Placed Under State of Calamity Due to Flooding
Marikina City was placed under a state of calamity due to flooding caused by incessant rains.
Mayor Marcelino Teodoro said the City Council yesterday approved Resolution No. 115, s. 2018 placing the entire city under the state of calamity in order to provide immediate relief assistance to flood-hit residents.
“Nagdeklara na tayo ng state of calamity dahil isang linggo na ring nakararanas nang malalakas na pag-ulan. Maraming mga residente ang hindi na rin makakapasok dahil sa mga pagbaha,” Teodoro said.
He said preemptive evacuation of residents in flood-prone areas has been undertaken as the water level in the Marikina River rises with intermittent heavy rains from enhanced Habagat.
Also, the mayor said classes at all levels in private and public schools are suspended for Monday, July 23, due to threats of floods.
As of 10 a.m. on Sunday, the Marikina River’s water level had risen to 17.4 meters prompting the local government to sound “second alarm” and evacuate more than 3,000 individuals from low-lying areas.
However, by 4:15 p.m., the water level of Marikina River had subsided to 15.9 meters. (PIA-NCR)
