An armed man looking for Archbishop Jose Palma was shot dead on July 10 at the Archbishop’s residence compound.

At around 10 a.m., a man named Jeffrey Cañedo, a resident of Brgy. Labangon based on his driver’s license, was on-board his motorcycle and entered the Archbishop’s Palace gate.

He was entertained by the secretaries of the palace. He said he was looking for Archbishop Palma but the secretaries noticed something was off about him, prompting them to call the police.

When a Mobile Patrol Group of Cebu City police arrived at the scene, the police officers tried to convince the armed man to surrender but instead he drew his gun thus forcing the police respondents to retaliate resulting to a shootout.

Found in Cañedo’s possession was a revolver. Cañedo suffered multiple gunshot wounds leading to his death.

The police are still investigating the motives of the suspect. Jeffrey Cañedo is a son of a retired Police Inspector Feliciano Cañedo.

Just a few weeks before this incident, multiple cases of priests being gunned down were reported. On December 5, 2017, Fr. Marcelito Paez was ambushed by a riding in tandem at Jaen, Nueva Ecija. Another priest was killed later on April 29, 2018. Fr. Mark Ventura was also killed and recently on June 10, 2018 was shot dead in a chapel while preparing for a mass in Zaragoza, Nueva Ecija.
