Senator-elect Risa Hontiveros on Sunday said she will push for universal health care in the Senate.

She also said she will push for a strong and independent Senate.

Hontiveros took her oath of office Sunday before Cebu Governor Hilario Davide III at the Cebu Provincial Capitol.

She said he took her oath of office in Cebu as her way of thanking the Cebuanos for voting for her.

“The Akbayan Party and I chose for me to take my oath as senator here in Cebu as our way, my way of saying thank you to the Cebuanos,” Hontiveros said.

Hontiveros ran for senator under Akbayan Party in both May 11, 2010 and May 13, 2013 but lost.

“In all my three attempts, the seven-year journey, a grand adventure defying gravity, even when I lost twice in the national level, Cebu has always included me in victory. I always landed in the top 12,” Hontiveros said.

“So, I and may partymates chose to take oath in Cebu as our, my personal, my symbolic way of saying thank you very much,” Hontiveros said.

She also said she was happy to note Davide told her it was the first time a senator took her oath of office at the Cebu Capitol. (PNA) LAP/EB/SSC
