15,000 IEC Delegates Join Visita Iglesia In Cebu City
Some 15,000 delegates of the 51st International Eucharistic Congress joined the “Visita Iglesia” or church visit Thursday afternoon to seven churches in the city.
The participating churches are the Asilo de la Medall Milagrosa on Gorod St., Our Lady of the Sacred Heart on Escario St., Redemptorist church near gen. Maxilom Ave., Sto. Rosario church on P. Del Rosario St., Sacred Heart Church on Jakosalem St., Cebu Mteropolitan Cathedralon Mabilni St. and Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño on Osmena Blvd, all in Cebu City.
The Visita Iglesia started at 5 p.m. Thursday, but the roads near the participating churches were closed to vehicular traffic starting at 4 p.m. until 10 p.m.
The affected roads downtown are D. Jakosalem St., Legaspi St., P. del Rosario and Pelaez St., and Escario St., Gorordo Ave., F. Sotto St. and Juana Osmeña St. in uptown area.
A total of 100 buses are used to bring the delegates to the different churches.
Jonathan Tumulak, operations officer of the Cebu City Transportation Office (CCTO) said the affected roads will be cleared of all types of vehicles as additional security measure.
“The police and the organizers asked us to remove all the vehicles because they could pose risks to the participants since we don’t know what’s inside these vehicles,” he said. (PNA) LAP/EB/EDS
