Cebu City Government Attends to Needs of Stranded Passengers at Cebu Port

The Cebu City Government on Monday provided packed meals for passengers who were stranded at the Cebu port after the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) barred more than 30 passenger vessels from leaving port because of typhoon “Nona.”

Edwin Seno, manager of Terminal 1 of the Cebu port, said some 300 passengers chose to stay at the terminal until the weather clears and the vessels are allowed to set sail.

Dr. Ester Concha, chief of Cebu City’s Department of Social Welfare and Services (DSWS), said they will provide food for the stranded passengers until they are able to leave for their respective destinations.

Concha said the packed meal costs PHP80 each.

She said the city is ready to respond and give food to people in distress such as victims of calamities and fires.

Seno, on the other hand, urged passengers not to come to the port unless they are sure the PCG will allow the vessels to sail to avoid inconvenience.

But Seno said the Cebu port’s Terminal 1 can accommodate some 1,000 passengers at any given time.

Earlier reports said as many as 1,400 passengers were stranded at the Cebu port but most of them opted to go home. (PNA) LAP/EB/EDS
