(PNA) — Rains due to southwest monsoon or “hanging habagat” are expected over parts of Luzon, including Metro Manila, Tuesday while weather is seen to improve over parts of the Visayas and Mindanao, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

In an interview, PAGASA weather forecaster Shaira Nonot said the southwest monsoon continues to affect Luzon and occurrence of intermittent to continuous rains, due to the prevailing wind system during the rainy season, is expected.

Nonot said occasional rains will be experienced over Ilocos region and the provinces of Occidental Mindoro, Bataan and Zambales while cloudy skies with light to moderate rains and isolated thunderstorms are expected over Metro Manila, Eastern Visayas and the rest of Luzon.

She said the weather is expected to improve over the rest of Visayas and Mindanao as fair weather, which involves partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated thunderstorms, will prevail over Mindanao and the rest of Visayas.

Weather disturbance is not expected in the country until Friday, she said.

Nonot explained that two to four tropical cyclones are expected this August with the next one, which would be the ninth for the year, will be named “Ineng”.

In its advisory, the state weather bureau said moderate to strong winds blowing from the southwest will prevail over Luzon and Visayas and coastal waters in these areas will be moderate to rough.

“Elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the southeast with slight to moderate seas,” it said. (PNA) FFC/JS/CLTC
