Barangay Sambag 2 in Cebu City Monday was placed under a state of calamity after some 135 families lost their homes in a fire that hit Sitio Kabulihan late Sunday night.

No one was reported injured in the fire, fire probers said.

Damage was placed at PHP1 million.

Police also held one person after witnesses claimed he started the fire.

The fire was tapped out at about 11:20 p.m. Sunday and it took firefighters more than an hour to control.

Sambag 2 Barangay Captain Lemar Alcover said the declaration of the state of calamity will allow the barangay to tap its calamity funds to help the fire victims.

Alcover said the residents who were displaced by the fire are temporarily housed at the barangays’ sports center.

Police were still investigating the man held for the fire for possible filing of charges of arson. (PNA) LAP/EB/EDS
