Typhoon ‘Nangka’ Skirts PHL; No Chance to Recurve to PAR — PAGASA

(PNA) — The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Wednesday said typhoon “Nangka” will not enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) as it is now headed towards Japan.

In a phone interview Wednesday, PAGASA weather forecaster Shaira Nonot said “it’s heading towards Japan and outside the PAR, located above the 25˚latitude.”

She noted the weather formation has no chance of re-curving back to the Philippines due to its current northward direction, compared to its northwestern track yesterday (Tuesday).

Nonot added there are no other weather formations seen outside the PAR.

PAGASA also warned Wednesday that the southwest monsoon might bring flash floods or landslides to Ilocos region and province of Benguet in Cordillera on Wednesday.

In its 5 a.m. weather bulletin Wednesday, which is a 24-hour forecast, PAGASA said “monsoon rains which may trigger flash floods and landslides will be experienced over Ilocos region and the province of Benguet.”

The southwest monsoon — better-known as “hanging habagat” — brings rains to the country from April to October.

PAGASA also warned occasional rains will occur in the Cagayan Valley, the rest of Cordillera, including the provinces of Zambales and Bataan.

Other parts of the country, including Metro Manila, will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated thunderstorms.

The archipelago will also experience moderate to strong winds coming from the southwest, causing seas to be moderate to rough.

Meanwhile, PAGASA has issued a gale warning over the seaboards of Northern and Central Luzon, adding strong to gale force winds are expected from the southwest monsoon.

It advises fishing boats and other all seacrafts not to head out to sea, while also warning larger sea vessels against huge waves. (PNA) JBP/JLD
