Pres. Aquino to Lead Groundbreaking Rites for Mactan Airport T2 Monday
President Benigno S. Aquino III will lead the groundbreaking of the Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) Terminal 2 (T2) today.
T2 will rise on a lot currently occupied by the Philippine Air Force (PAF), adjacent to the existing terminal.
The PAF facilities were torn down to give way to T2, but these were replicated inside the Mactan Air Base at a cost of PhP800 million.
GMR-Megawide Cebu Airport Corp. (GMCAC), which won the PhP17.5-billion MCIA airport expansion project, will build the T2.
GMCAC earlier paid PhP14.4 billion to the MCIA Authority after it was awarded with the 25-year concession agreement to manage the MCIA under the public-private partnership (PPP) scheme.
Louie Manuel Ferrer, GMCAC president, said Mactan Airport T2 will have an area of about 50,000 square meters.
Ferrer said this area can still be expanded as the need for more space arises.
The existing Mactan Airport terminal, built for a capacity of 4.5 million passengers a year, now handles some seven million passengers.
Mactan Airport T2 will increase the airport’s capacity to 12 million passengers. (PNA) SCS/EB/PJN
