Japan’s Nuclear Facilities Undamaged by Strong Quake in Tokyo

Tokyo (PNA/ITAR-TASS) — No abnormalities have been reported at any nuclear facilities in Japan following the powerful magnitude 5.6 earthquake that hit Tokyo and surrounding areas on Monday, the country’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry has said.

No increase in the radiation levels has been registered. In particular, the situation at nuclear facilities at the Tokaimura scientific center close to the quake epicenter remains normal.

After the quake, an emergency headquarters was set up under the control of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s administration. So far, it has received no reports on the injuries or damage.

The epicenter of the quake was in Saitama Prefecture, to the north of Tokyo, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. The Japanese authorities initially issued a tsunami warning, but later revoked it.

The quake shook buildings in Tokyo, including a TASS bureau. Tokyo metro services were temporarily suspended but were later restored in full. The quake also caused a temporary suspension of traffic on several lines of high-speed railways.

Narita International Airport, serving the Greater Tokyo Area of Japan, resumed operation following checks at runways. (PNA/ITAR-TASS) FFC/SSC
