Capitol, NHCP Sign Memorandum to Restore Museo Sugbo

The Cebu provincial government signed a Memorandum of Agreement with National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) recently for the rehabilitation and restoration of the provincial museum or Museo Sugbo.

Governor Hilario P. Davide III, Vice-governor Agnes Magpale, Provincial board member and Arts and Culture committee head Miguel Antonio Magpale and NHCP Executive Director, Ludovico D. Badoy, signed the agreement.

Museo Sugbo, a 150-year old historical structure was constructed in the Spanish colonial era, suffered damages in its interior and perimeter walls following the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit Cebu in October 2013.

The purpose of the MOA is to restore the structure under the care of the provincial government in accordance with international and national conservation standards.

The conservation plan involves the rehabilitation of the structure with regard to its structural soundness, architectural and historical integrity based on scientific studies and historical research.

Budget

The restoration and rehabilitation project is shouldered by the national government under NHCP with a budget of P10million and will be completed in four (4) to five (5) months.

The bidding process will take place within this week and the restoration procedure follows soon after.

“For bidding na po ito, then awarding…the process would take a month or less,” Badoy said.

Apart from the provincial museum, NHCP will also proceed with the restoration of other historical structures in Cebu City that were also damaged by the earthquake such as the centuries-old belfry of the Basilica Minore del Sto. Niño and Fort San Pedro.

Restoration work is also set for old churches in southern Cebu towns such as Bojoon, Samboan, Carcar, Sibonga, Dalaguete, and Dumanjug.
