(Cebu City PIO)  — Cebu City Mayor Michael L Rama witnessed the blessing of the refurbished Cebu City Central School building and also led the unveiling of a marker to what is considered as one of the remaining Gabaldon Schoolhouses built under Philippine Commission Act no. 1801.

Together with Atty. Augusto W. Go, an alumnus and benefactor of the said project, Mayor Rama reminded everyone especially the students to always treasure the values and learnings from their Alma Mater and should be grateful to their teachers.

He encouraged them to epitomize Atty. Go, who is like him, though a product of a public school education and is now very successful in his field of undertaking and passion.

Seeing the need to put up a flagpole in front of the building and to have the existing fence to be developed, Rama immediately asked Atty. Go to make it happen.

Go, who was a grade 3 student and had attended his class in the said building in 1945, just replied to the mayor’s call and said, “Thy will be done!”

To recall, at least eight classrooms in the old Gabaldon-style school which were mostly made of wood, were damaged after a fire engulfed it last August 2012. The said building was used by grade 5 pupils and Night high school students. Fortunately, no students were in the building at the time of the incident.

The term “Gabaldon” is used to generally refer to school buildings built in the 1900s under the time of Rep. Isauro Gabaldon, then governor of Nueva Ecija and an assemblyman, who authored the said Act for the construction of such schoolhouses in every municipality all over the country.

Also present during the activity were school principal Raylene Manawatao and some DepEd Cebu City officials. (elite)
