Typhoon Ruby: Red Cross Puts Death Toll at 27

As of December 9, 2014 (9:20 am) the Philippine National Red Cross reported that Ruby left 27 dead, GMA News Online reported.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Council (NDRRMC), however, confirmed only two, a report on 24 Oras said.

Most of the people killed were on the far eastern island of Samar, where Typhoon Ruby (Hagupit) initially made landfall last Saturday with winds of 210 kilometers (130 miles) an hour, report said.

Red Cross said that the casualties were from Samar and Iloilo but 16 of these were from Borongan City in Eastern Samar.

It added that three of these were from Iloilo, two were residents of Hernani and Dolores of Eastern Samar.

Red Cross said Western Samar and Northern Samar had one casualty each.

Meanwhile, NDRRMC said that the two residents in Iloilo died due to hypothermia.

The NDRRMC said they are still under official validation, adding they are waiting for validation by the Department of Health. NDRRMC added that at least 45 were reported injured.

Meanwhile, the NDRRMC said the estimated damage to property caused by Ruby has breached the P1-billion mark.

Areas under a state of calamity: Catanduanes, Aklan, Cebu, Pilar town in Capiz, Masbate, Camarines Sur and Albay.
