US Gives 2 New School Buildings to Yolanda Survivors

Survivors of super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in Palo, Leyte on Thursday, Nov. 6, will receive two new school buildings from the United States government, GMA News Online reported.

Report said the US Agency for International Development (USAID) Chief Human Capital Officer Elizabeth Kolmstetter will turn over the buildings in the afternoon.

“The buildings are designed to withstand strong winds and earthquakes. The P12-million project will include six classrooms furnished with student chairs, steel cabinets, blackboards, fire extinguishers and teacher kits, desks and chairs,” it said.

Expected to benefit are more than 200 students who have been attending class in temporary learning spaces and makeshift classrooms since Yolanda destroyed their old school buildings last year.

The province of Palo is one of the areas hit hardest by Yolanda, leaving more than 6,000 dead when it pounded the Visayas area on Nov. 8 last year.

Leyte Governor Leopoldo Dominico Petilla and Palo Mayor Remedios Petilla are expected to participate in the turnover ceremony, report said.
