Tips For Optimizing Space in a Small Home

Published

(NC) The average home size is shrinking now that our urban centers are getting so dense. But this should not get in the way of enjoying your small home.

“More people are finding themselves living in spaces smaller than those they grew up in,” says Ralph Stephen, owner of Royal LePage Atlantic, “so it is important to use some tricks to optimize all available space.”

A key change to give your home a larger feel is to use a light, neutral palette on the walls. Lighter colors have the effect of amplifying natural light in your space. Additionally, by using two colors from a single color family in one larger room you can break up an open space into more distinct areas. To avoid a bland or clinical feel, play with brighter colors in the details – using accent pillows or artwork to add some punch.

Another trick to help a room appear more spacious is to avoid clutter. Limited counter space in smaller homes means there is no room for extraneous items in the kitchen, living room or bathroom. Try to keep everything tucked away while it is not in use to make your space less congested. This approach extends to decorative pieces as well – overwhelming a wall or shelf with too many knick-knacks detracts from the sense of space.

Finally, make as many multi-functioning furniture choices as possible. If one piece of furniture can double as both a headboard and a bookcase, you’ve already reduced the number of pieces you need. Furniture that has built-in storage is a plus – one more place to tuck things away.

Living in a smaller space can be a positive experience. Whether you are looking for a trendy condo, or a comfy cottage, there are plenty of options to make your small home functional and comfortable.
