VSMMC Launches Anti-Smoking, Wellness Program for Gov’t Workers

Health authorities in Cebu launched a comprehensive wellness program that includes a therapy for smokers to quit smoking according to Dr.Anabelle Fuentes of Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC).

Fuentes on Wednesday said they are conducting a wellness program at the provincial state hospital not only for smokers but to all those wants to maintain good health. the purpose of creating a VSMMC -Wellness and Occupational Health Center(VSMMC-WOHC) is to educate and teach especially office workers on how to maintain permanently their good health, she said.

Fuentes added that since the establishment of the VSMMC-WOHC on August 2013, they have already signed up memorandum of agreements (MOA) with at least 10 national and local government in Cebu City whose workers-patient are doing a monthly consultation and physical check ups with the center.

She stressed that under the MOA, the center’s duty is to teach these workers to discipline themselves from improper behavior on eating , drinking and even smoking.

Fuentes, however, did not mention about figures of male smokers who quit smoking habit gradually through techniques and approaches taught by the center.

Aside from smoker, there were plenty of obese government workers who submit themselves to the center.

“They listened and practiced to what the center advised to them, they reformed their eating attitude and they are living now in a normal condition of life,” Fuentes said.

Fuentes also revealed that the center has a unique program and concept which focused on giving answers to present problems posed by the advent of modern technology, which sometimes disables an office worker from moving around his working space.

Stagnancy of oneself from doing ordinary walk and other practical means of exercise, even inside the office, can create various health problems, Fuentes said.

This is the reason why she advised every company to get a MOA with them and they assure to maintain their workers’ health, she added.
