Six Ambush Suspects in Bohol Killed

●Exchange of gun fire ensued and lasted for several minutes after suspects fired shots while policemen were approaching the area.

Following the ambushed that killed the police chief of Ubay town in Bohol on Saturday evening, authorities killed six suspects during the follow-up operation conducted in the nearby town of Bien-Unido.

Ubay town police Chief Inspector George Caña was driving his Mitsubishi DMax pick-up vehicle while on his way home to Barangay Balintawak, Talibon town at 7 pm when another vehicle that attempted an overtake, sprayed bullets on Caña’s vehicle.

When the police chief was hit, his vehicle swerved into the roadside while suspects fired more shots, authorities said. Caña sustained bullet wounds on his head and body that caused his instantaneous death.

Follow-up Operation

Combined forces of the Bohol Provincial Intelligence Branch (PIB) and Special Weapon and Tactics (SWAT) quickly conducted an investigation and a follow-up operation against the suspected killers of Caña.

Police said Caña had received death threats after he led an anti-drug operation in Ubay, where he had arrested some suspected drug pushers.

Sighted

After the ambush, police received information that armed men believed to have ambushed Caña have been sighted in a resort in Barangay Puerto San Pedro in the nearby town of Bien-Unido.

Authorities said they rushed to the said place but the suspects fired shots at them while they were approaching the area, which prompted them to retaliate that resulted to an exchange of gun fire that lasted for several minutes.

Six Killed

According to authorities, six suspects were killed after the incident. One of them was identified as dismissed PO1 Owen Rosales, formerly assigned with Guindulman (Bohol) Police Station. The five other bodies remain unidentified as of Sunday night.

Aside from the six casualties, police also arrested four other members of the group. They are identified as Roberto Olalo, Orlando Garcia, Paulo Avenido and a minor.

Firearms Recovered

The police claimed that they recovered some firearms in the cottages where the suspects stayed. However, the inventory is still in progress as of Sunday night.

Caña is the second police chief killed in Bohol in two months.

Last April 29, Danao (Bohol) acting police chief Noel Romagos was also ambushed and killed by unidentified armed men.
