Potential Cyclone Approaching Mindanao, PAGASA Says
Weather forecaster said on Thursday that a potential cyclone approaching from the east could make landfall over Mindanao this weekend after entering the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) on Friday.
PAGASA’s Samuel Duran said their models show that the potential cyclone which is presently a low-pressure area, is likely to intensify into a cyclone after it enters the PAR.
Duran said the low pressure area (LPA) is expected to be a typhoon approaching Caraga and Davao by Saturday.
In its latest bulletin Thursday, PAGASA said the trough (extension of an LPA) is affecting Mindanao, while the northeast monsoon is affecting Luzon adding that once the LPA becomes a cyclone, it will be locally codenamed ‘Agaton’.
Typhoon ‘Agaton’ will be the first cyclone in the Philippines for 2014.
Duran said the LPA is presently 1,400 km east of Mindanao and their models show it is likely to enter the PAR Friday, then make landfall Saturday.
PAGASA said “Palawan, Visayas, and Mindanao will experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms.”
Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated light rains, while moderate to strong winds from the northeast will prevail over northern Luzon and the eastern sections of Luzon and of Visayas. The coastal waters along these areas will be moderate to rough, PAGASA said.
PAGASA added that elsewhere, winds will be light to moderate coming from the northeast with slight to moderate seas, Gma News Online reported.
