Capitol Gives P23M Aid to Northern Cebu
After sending relief good packs the past three weeks, the Cebu Provincial Government turned over more than P20 million in financial aid to local government units in northern Cebu which were devastated by super storm Yolanda last November 8.
Governor Hilario Davide III said the money will be used to buy construction materials so the northern Cebu people can start rebuilding their homes. It can be recalled that thousands of houses, private establishments and government infrastructures were damaged by Yolanda when it made a landfall in the northern Cebu.
“We have given a total of about P23 million in financial assistance to the affected areas. Towns that suffer heavy damage are given P2 million and those with lesser damage are given P1 million each,” said Davide.
There are 15 LGUs in the north including those in the islands of Camotes and Bantayan that were wrecked by the super typhoon.
Earlier, the Capitol had stopped giving relief packs to the people saying it would only make them dependent on free food, especially that there was already more than enough aid in terms of food and water that reached these areas. Davide said it is about time the province concentrates on rebuilding the communities in the north.
Davide has also urged Capitol employees and the public to donate galvanized iron (GI) sheets and iron nails to the victims. The governor said he may increase the sum of donation depending on the needs of the north.
