Fish Vendors Agree Permanent Relocation

Fresh fish vendors in Barangay Pasil have already agreed on a permanent relocation at a vacant area adjacent to the unused Pasil Fish Port in coastal area of Barangay Suba.

The hundreds of fish wholesalers and retailers earlier asked Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama to allow them to use again the Pasil Fish Market along Tupaz Street just across the San Nicolas Church.

But the mayor is firm on his stand not to allow anymore the fish vendors to use the old market building after a part of it collapsed and flattened to death five people during the 7.2 Magnitude quake last October 15. The mayor is planning to demolish the Pasil Fish Market (Phase 1) building and convert the one hectare area as a public plaza.

“Dili na kami mopugos nga mobalik pagpaninda sa Pasil Fish Market apan gihangyo lang namo ang mayor nga paspasan niya ang pagsemento o kaha pag-aspalto sa dapit nga patindahan niya namo unya butangan og atop,” said former Councilor Procopio Fernandez, who is also a fish dealer.

Although Rama did not assure that the concreting of the new vending area can be implemented right away, the mayor said he will try his best to improve the situation of the place.

When the Pasil Fish Market was constructed several years ago, Church officials had decided to close the main entrance facing the market due to its untidy surroundings.
