Comelec: All Prepared For Election On Monday
Even if several school buildings in Cebu City were damaged by the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit Bohol and Cebu last October 15, the officials of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) claimed that they are already prepared to hold the barangay election on Monday.
Comelec-7 Regional Director Temie Lambino said despite the destruction brought by last week’s powerful earthquake there has been enough classrooms that can be use for the election.
During elections, not all of the classrooms in school buildings will be used. In Cebu City for example, Comelec will only use 560 classrooms because two or three original precincts are to be clustered into one precinct.
“The destruction of some of the classrooms will not affect the election. Even if there were damages brought by the October 15 quake to our polling centers, I would say still that we can go on with our election because we have enough classrooms to conduct the October 28 election,” Lambino said.
He explained that although he received reports on the destruction of some classrooms, there is no report from the election officers on the need to create makeshift polling precincts during the Election Day.
Cebu Provincial Schools Superintendent Arden Monisit earlier reported that there are 549 classrooms in 170 schools of the province that were damaged by the earthquake.
The Comelec top officials in the region has reminded the candidates to always comply with the provisions of the law.
In Cebu City, there are 1,080 candidates in the north district and 917 candidates in the south district who are running for the positions of barangay captain and councilmen.
