Phivolcs: No Device Yet Can Predict Earthquake
Amid fears of a purported upcoming 8.0 magnitude earthquake that is said to hit Central Visayas anytime, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) immediately issued a statement negating such report.
“There’s a very small chance for another stronger earthquake there. No device can ever predict an earthquake. It is best to consult proper authorities to clarify these kinds of messages,” Phivolcs Director Renato Solidum.
Phivolcs statement came after a message claimed that there is an upcoming stronger earthquake, were spread via text messages and on Facebook. The said message was reportedly confirmed by Phivolcs and was reported by a Tv network.
Apart from saying that they could not predict, Solidum said it would take “another hundred years to generate a new quake of that magnitude in that same fault plane.”
Solidum, however, said that aftershocks will continue for weeks but their intensity will decline.
Meanwhile, the tv network has clarified that they did not have a hand on the said message, and asked that their name should not be used as an instrument to cause panic to the public.
