Walking Among Thorns: Grace for Our Secret Battles

Published

on

Here’s something most of us won’t say out loud. We all have a thorn. A quiet, private struggle that we tuck behind a Sunday smile and hope nobody notices. And somehow we’ve convinced ourselves that if we’re truly faithful, the thorn shouldn’t be there at all. This five-day plan from Roell Morales flips that thinking wide open. Walking through the apostle Paul’s own thorn, it makes the case that your struggle doesn’t disqualify you from God’s purpose. It actually teaches you to lean into a grace that shows up strongest when you’re at your weakest. Five days. Short readings. A gentle place to be honest.

Day 1: The Invisible Weight
The reading opens with a question that hits harder than it should. How are you doing? And not the automatic “blessed and fine” answer we hand out in church hallways. The real one. The one that lives behind your closed bedroom door when nobody’s watching.

The writer says it plain. It’s okay not to be okay all the time. You are not a bad Christian for feeling tired.

Then the reading takes aim at one of the most damaging lies we’ve swallowed inside the church. The idea that pastors, leaders, and longtime believers are walking around with perfect, pain-free lives. That they raise their hands in worship and never feel a flicker of doubt. That they pray and never once feel afraid. The truth is, the church is not a museum of perfect people. It’s a hospital for broken ones. From the pastor behind the pulpit buckling under the pressure of leading, to the person in the very last row quietly fighting for their marriage, everyone is walking through thorns.

And then the reading points to King David. The man after God’s own heart. He wrote Psalm 34 during one of the most humiliating, terrifying stretches of his life. He knew what it felt like to be one breath away from falling apart. And in that psalm, he doesn’t say God draws close to the ones who always smile. He says God is near to the brokenhearted.

So here’s the invitation for today. If you’re hauling around an invisible weight, chronic sadness, money stress, mental exhaustion that nobody in your circle can see, stop hiding from God. Stop thinking your honesty will disappoint Him. Take the mask off. Your Father doesn’t need you to be invincible. He just needs you to be real. Bring your thorns. Because it’s right there, in the middle of the brokenness, where His embrace hits the hardest.

The reflection asks you to name the weight. What thorn are you hiding behind a smile in front of your family, your friends, your congregation? And how does it feel to know that God doesn’t require perfection to come close? Just an honest heart.

And the prayer underneath it all is simple. God, I’m done pretending. I’m tired. There are thorns in my walk and they hurt. Forgive me for acting like I’ve got it all together. Thank You for meeting me in the mess. I’m handing You the pain I’ve been hiding. Be my rest today.

You don’t have to be strong today. You just have to be honest.
