DanceSport Athletes Meet For 6th ‘Dancesport Sa Sugbu’
Nearly a thousand athletes from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao are expected to converge in Cebu for the “6th Dancesport sa Sugbu & Queen City Open DanceSport Championship” on September 14, 2013 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel and Casino.
In Cebu alone, an elimination round had to be conducted a month prior to the event in order to accommodate first-time athletes coming from the free Dancesport workshops. Some 120 couples vied for the top spots during elimination that resulted in 36 couples (from 3 divisions – elementary, high school, college) qualified to compete for free in the “6th DanceSport sa Sugbu” and automatically absorbed into the Dancesport Team Cebu City training pool.
Dancesport sa Sugbu is touted to be the “Friendliest Competition in the World”, and is home of the Guinness World Record for Largest Dance Class. DanceSport Team Cebu City is the Guinness World Record Holder for World’s Largest Dance Class of 7,770 participants. It has an advocacy of holding FREE Year-Round DanceSport Workshops for the underprivileged enthusiasts. (Image credit: Dance Sport Team Cebu City Facebook page)
Also in Cebu province are athletes representing Mandaue, Talisay, Naga, Carcar and Cebu City. From Luzon: Baguio City, Metro Manila, Pasig City, Lucena City; Visayas: Hinunangan Leyte, Dumaguete, Siquijor, Ormoc, Bacolod City; Mindanao: Davao, Panabo, Kidapawan, Koronadal, General Santos, Cagayan de Oro, and Tacurong City. Athletes from other countries such as Brunei, Singapore, Japan paired with Filipino dance teachers to qualify in the dance teacher-student category.
This competition for a cause is the culmination activity of hundreds of child trainees (mostly under-privileged) who were given regular free dancesport workshops and follow-through trainings in Cebu City’s 80 barangays including the remote mountainous areas made possible by the untiring and selfless efforts of dance teacher-volunteers.
DanceSport Team Cebu City (DTCC) created DanceSport sa Sugbu for the primary purpose of letting these barangay child trainees get a first-hand experience of what it is like joining in a professionally officiated dance competition. The exposure will instill in them self-discipline, self-confidence, and self-worth. This experience will inspire the children to train harder and aspire for a better future.
The event is made possible through the generous support of its presenters, the Cebu City Government, Department of Tourism, Philippine Sports Commission, Cebu City Sports Commission and DanceSport Council of the Philippines and Waterfront Cebu City Hotel & Casino; the Platinum Sponsor International Pharmaceuticals Inc., makers of Omega PRO, Casino Ethyl Alcohol and Lecit-E; the Gold Sponsors Flawless, Virginia Foods, Julie’s Bakeshop, PROSEL Pharmaceutical Inc. maker of Klix Teen; the Donors Smart, Pagcor Cebu, San Miguel Brewery Inc., Papa Kit’s Marina & Fishing Lagoon, Estaca Bay Gardens Conference Resort, Nalusuan Island Resort and Marine Sanctuary; and the Media Partners Alcordo Advertising, SkyCable, ABS-CBN, TV5, Business Mirror, Expat Newspaper, SunStar Daily, The Freeman Newspaper, Cebu Photoworks, Y101, Radyo 5 and Love Radio.
