Talisay Gives Aid

The Talisay City government since last week has been distributing food supplies and cash assistance to fishermen who were affected in the oil spill incident since the sinking of MV St. Thomas Aquinas almost two weeks ago.

Mayor Johnny delos Reyes personally handed four kilos of rice, canned goods, noodles and P500 cash to each fisherman. As of Wednesday, at least 500 from the city’s eight coastal barangays—Tangke, Poblacion, Cansojong, San Roque, Dumlog, Pooc, Biasong and Mohon–have benefited from the program. Delos Reyes said aside from the aid the city is giving to them,  the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) has also promised to give each member of the affected families a one-month contract to work at the City Hall.

Delos Reyes said only those fishermen affected by the oil spill will be given aid. The oil spill, which stemmed after MV St. Thomas Aquinas was rammed by Sulpicio Express 7 last August 16, scattered all over Metro Cebu. The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources 7 (Bfar7) to advise local fishers to stop catching seafood for the time being while the spill is being contained.
