Plane Overshoots Mactan-Cebu Runway, Flights Halted

Published

International and domestic flights to and from Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) are disrupted as a Korean Air plane overshot the airport runway.

Korean Air flight no. KE631 from Seoul, South Korea overshot the MCIA runway no. 04 during its landing during a heavy downpour of rain Sunday night.

8 of the 162 passengers on the Korean air flight sustained minor injuries, while the 11 crew members were completely safe.

According to MCIA, the Airbus A330 aircraft is still stuck on airport runway no. 04, and all flights are to be suspended until Tuesday midnight.

This comes as authorities are still in the process of de-fueling the airplane before it can be safely removed from the runway.

Meanwhile, MCIA is mulling partially opening portions of the runway before Tuesday midnight as management plans to shorten the closure of the runway from the current three kilometers down to 2.6 kilometers.

This will effectively make the runway available for the arrival of smaller airplanes to MCIA.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines is now investigating the incident. (GFB)
